The “Boring” (But Crucial) Logistics
We know this is the part you want to skip, but it’s the part that makes the wedding successful.
Civil Ceremony: This is a legally binding ceremony performed by the Mayor or a designated town hall official. It typically takes place in approved locations, such as stunning municipal buildings or licensed villas and hotels. The ceremony is conducted in Italian, so an official interpreter is required if either you, your partner, or your witnesses do not speak the language. We assist in securing the venue and coordinating the necessary officials and interpreter.
Religious Ceremony (Catholic): Italy recognises Catholic weddings as legally binding, provided specific canonical and civil procedures are followed. This involves coordinating with your home parish and the Italian church, obtaining documents like baptism and confirmation certificates, attending a pre-cana course, and potentially securing a Nulla Osta from the local Bishop. Ceremonies can take place in breathtaking historic churches, such as the magnificent Amalfi Duomo.1 We guide you through this intricate process.
Religious Ceremony (Other Faiths): Weddings performed by ministers of other faiths (Protestant, Jewish, etc.) are possible but generally require a separate civil ceremony to be legally recognized in Italy. These ceremonies often offer more flexibility in location, potentially taking place in villas, gardens, or other scenic spots. We help coordinate both the religious and civil components if needed.
Symbolic Ceremony: This option offers the ultimate freedom and personalization. As it is not legally binding in Italy, a symbolic wedding Italy can take place virtually anywhere – a panoramic terrace, a lush garden, aboard a yacht, or on a secluded beach. You have complete control over the content, vows, music, and officiant (who can be a professional celebrant or even a friend/family member). This is an increasingly popular choice for destination weddings, allowing couples to handle the legal marriage registration simply in their home country before or after their Italian celebration, focusing entirely on a meaningful, personalized ceremony abroad.7 It’s also perfect for vow renewals.
Civil vs. Symbolic: The Legal Tea
The “Plan B” (Rain Plan) It rains on the Amalfi Coast. Even in July. If a planner tells you “it won’t rain,” run. We always have a Plan B. And we design the Plan B to be just as beautiful as Plan A. Venues like Villa Eva or crypts in Amalfi offer stunning indoor options that don’t feel like a compromise.
